Browser Workbench is a web design company of one. I'm Hamza, a software developer based in Sheffield, and I design, build and check every site myself, from £199 for one page or £399 for up to 5 pages. That is the main difference from a web design agency: there is no account manager or hand-off between teams. It also has limits, and this page lists them, including the jobs where an agency is the better choice.
One-page site £199, small site £399, business site from £699. All prices include VAT.
Fewer people between you and the work. For a small business site, that usually means fewer misunderstandings.
The person you describe your business to is the person who designs, codes and checks the site. Nothing is lost in a hand-off.
It lists the pages, the features and the total price before you agree to anything.
Your domain, website files and hosting stay in accounts you own, and I hand over the files and access at launch.
I reply within one working day. You are not waiting on a ticket queue.
The person you brief is the person who builds the site.
A company of one has real limits. Better to know them before you ask for a quote.
There is no account manager, no in-house team of specialists and no one to cover the work if I am busy. If I cannot start soon, the quote says when I can.
I do not offer photography, video, a full brand identity or paid advertising management. A logo is an optional extra, and I can work with photos you supply. Larger sites with complex features are quoted individually, and I will say if a project is bigger than I should take on alone.
I would rather tell you than win a job I cannot do well.
Dozens of pages, several departments approving, or a site that must keep changing every week.
Brand identity, photography, film and an advertising campaign alongside the website, all under one contract.
If your organisation needs several named contacts or cover for holidays, a company with a team suits that better.
I do not offer ecommerce for now, so a shop needs a different supplier. An agency or a shop platform will serve you better.
The same three builds appear on every page of this site, so you can compare them with agency quotes.

All prices include VAT. Your fixed quote confirms the final price before any work starts.
Hosting with me is optional, from £19.99 a month. With your own hosting there is no monthly fee to me.
Allow 10 working days for a one-page or small site and 14 working days for a business site, counted from when the brief and your content are ready. There are 2 revision rounds in each build.
Not included: domain registration and renewal, email mailboxes, paid services from other companies, and extra pages and features, which are quoted first.
Put these to me and to anyone else you are considering.
A named person or a team, and whether it is the person you speak to.
And does it include VAT, the pages you need and a set number of revisions?
The domain, the files and the hosting account, if you stop working together.
Hosting, changes and renewals, written down.
Phones, forms, links, speed and security basics, before it goes live.
Real sites that exist, not mock-ups.
An honest side-by-side, including when a builder is the better choice.

See the workNo. Browser Workbench is one developer, Hamza Hussain, trading as a sole trader. That means no account manager and no team, and it means you deal with the person doing the work.
I cannot give you a market average, because I do not have a source for one. What I can give you is my own prices: £199 for one page, £399 for up to 5 pages and £699 for up to 8 pages. All prices include VAT. Compare that with a written quote from each agency, line by line.
The quote gives a delivery guide, and I tell you before you commit if I cannot meet the date you need. Work waits on your content and feedback too, so the delivery guide counts from when the brief and your content are ready.
Up to 8 pages is a business site. Larger sites and complex features are quoted individually as a Custom project. If I think a team would serve you better, I say so in the first reply.
No. I'm based in Sheffield and work remotely with small businesses across the UK. The brief, design review and launch all happen online.
You do. Your domain, website files and hosting stay in accounts you own, and I hand over the files and account access at launch.
Tell me about your business and what the site needs to do, and I will say whether I am the right fit. The quote lists the pages, features and total price before you agree to anything. I reply within one working day.
