Custom website or Wix and Squarespace

A website builder is a fair choice if you have time, a simple site and a small budget. A custom website suits you better if you want someone else to build and check it, need features a template does not offer, or want your own files and accounts.

  1. Your time

  2. Your features

  3. Your control

When a website builder is the right choice

Builders such as Wix and Squarespace let you start from a template and publish yourself. If you enjoy the work, have the hours to spare and need a handful of simple pages, that can be a sensible way to start. I do not sell either one, and I would tell you if a builder suited you better.

You also pay the builder a subscription for as long as the site is live. Check the current plans on the builder’s own site, because they change.

When a custom website fits better

A custom site is written for your business rather than fitted into a template. That matters when customers need to do something specific, such as request a quote with the details you need, or book through a flow that suits how you work.

It also matters if you want the work done for you. I design, build and test the site, so the time you spend is on the brief and the review.

Questions to settle it

  • Do I have the time to build and keep the site up to date myself?
  • Will customers need to do something a template cannot do?
  • Do I want my own files and accounts, so I can move the site?
  • What would it cost me if the subscription price rose?
